23 Concerning Damascus:
“Hamath and Arpad are
confounded,
for they have heard bad
news;
they melt in fear,
they are troubled like the
sea that cannot be quiet.
24 Damascus has become feeble, she turned to flee,
and panic seized her;
anguish and sorrows have taken hold of her,
as of a woman in
labor.
25 How is the famous city not forsaken,
the city of my joy?
26 Therefore her young men shall fall in her squares,
and all her soldiers shall
be destroyed in that day,
declares the Lord of
hosts.
27 And I will kindle a fire in the wall
of Damascus,
and it shall devour the
strongholds of Ben-hadad.”
● In Jeremiah
49:23-27, God pronounces judgment on Damascus, a powerful and famous ancient
city. God’s sovereignty extends over all earthly powers. Regardless of a
nation's military strength, renown, or wealth, no worldly stronghold can stand
against divine justice or offer true security.
● The
prophecy points out that Damascus, despite being a "city of praise"
and a famous stronghold, was quickly reduced to panic and helplessness. What
temporary "strongholds" (e.g., finances, status, planning) do you
rely on for peace and protection, and how do these compare to the unshakable
security found in God?
● The
text describes the people of Damascus being gripped by panic and pain,
comparing their distress to the stormy, restless sea. When you hear troubling
news or face overwhelming life circumstances, do you let anxiety consume you,
or do you look to God for peace and stability?
