October 9, 2025, Psalm 70:1-5
70 Make
haste, O God, to deliver me!
O Lord, make haste to help me!
2 Let them be put to shame and confusion
who seek
my life!
Let them be turned back and brought to dishonor
who
delight in my hurt!
3 Let them turn back because of their shame
who say,
“Aha, Aha!”
4 May all
who seek you
rejoice
and be glad in you!
May those who love your salvation
say
evermore, “God is great!”
5 But I am poor and needy;
hasten
to me, O God!
You are my help and my deliverer;
O Lord, do not delay!
Here the psalmist agonizes
in the midst of danger and cries out for God's intervention and protection
quickly. Further, he asks God to harm or punish the enemy. However, he
recognizes God’s glory and urges believers to rejoice.
I’m reminded of the
verse…But I say unto you, “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do
good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and
persecute you.” (Matthew 5:43–44).
It’s clear that the
psalmist lived long before Jesus spoke these words. Jesus gives clear direction
on how to respond to our enemies.
How do these words/ideas
resonate with you? Easy? Absolutely not.
How can we accomplish
Christ’s will with this command?
