April 30 – 1 Samuel 1:21-28

April 30 – 1 Samuel 1:21-28

21 The man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice and to pay his vow. 22 But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, “As soon as the child is weaned, I will bring him, so that he may appear in the presence of the Lord and dwell there forever.” 23 Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him; only, may the Lord establish his word.” So the woman remained and nursed her son until she weaned him. 24 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour, and a skin of wine, and she brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. And the child was young. 25 Then they slaughtered the bull, and they brought the child to Eli. 26 And she said, “Oh, my lord! As you live, my lord, I am the woman who was standing here in your presence, praying to the Lord. 27 For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him. 28 Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord.”

Hannah is so grateful for this child that she gives him back to the Lord.  Okay, moms, think about that.  You wean your baby about 2-3 years old and you give him to the priest to finish raising and to work for the Lord the rest of his life.  How many of you will sign up for that?  She wouldn’t have had that baby without the Lord, so she gave him back.  How precious each day must have been for her holding her sweet baby.  We would give up anything else but not our babies.  But God was obviously first in her life.  Who is first in your life?  What stands in the way of your time with God?  What stands in the way of doing what God has asked you to do?  Not that God will ask you to give up your baby, but there are things that we don’t do because it isn’t convenient, we don’t have time, we want to spend our money on other things, we like our privacy…

What stands  in the way of sharing about Jesus with others?  Those things you just listed…are idols.  Nothing should come between you and God.  What do you need to give up today to make God first in your life?

Heavenly Father, help me to put You first…always.  Help  me to see what things have become idols in my life or are in jeopardy of becoming idols.  I don’t want anything to come before You, but I know how easy it is for my life to drift into a place where I allow things to become more important than they should.  You gave me all those things, and none of them should be out of place in my life.  None of them should get in the way of my relationship and fellowship with You.  None of them should distract me from what is most important.  Thank You for helping me stay in the right mindset.

In Jesus name.

Amen!
