March 8 – Judges 9:50-57
50 Then
Abimelech went to Thebez and encamped against Thebez and captured it. 51 But
there was a strong tower within the city, and all the men and women and all the
leaders of the city fled to it and shut themselves in, and they went up to the
roof of the tower. 52 And Abimelech came to the
tower and fought against it and drew near to the door of the tower to burn it
with fire. 53 And a certain woman threw an upper
millstone on Abimelech's head and crushed his skull. 54 Then
he called quickly to the young man his armor-bearer and said to him, “Draw your
sword and kill me, lest they say of me, ‘A woman killed him.’” And his young
man thrust him through, and he died. 55 And when
the men of Israel saw that Abimelech was dead, everyone departed to his
home. 56 Thus God returned the evil of Abimelech,
which he committed against his father in killing his seventy brothers. 57 And
God also made all the evil of the men of Shechem return on their heads, and
upon them came the curse of Jotham the son of Jerubbaal.
In this passage, we see
Abimelech’s life come to an end. Death by a woman was a disgrace so Abimelech
asks his armor-bearer to finish his life by thrusting a sword through him. Once
this is accomplished, everyone runs off and abandons Abimelech.
The curse spoken by Jotham
has been completed and God has finished the punishment upon the Israelites. Oh,
the bloodshed and destroyed lives that lay in the path of destruction.
God wants what is best for
his children but he also allows us to make our own choices. Today choose to
seek what God wants for you as his way is always best.
Heavenly Father, so often
I feel things happen to me, but truth is I make decisions that aren’t in my
best interests or in Your will and I pay the price. Why do I blame You or others, or life, or circumstances
when its really my poor choices that get me into bad situations? Help me see truth, Father. Help me look to You prior to making decisions
so I don’t make mistakes that hurt me and those I love. Protect me from the enemy, and from
myself. Thank You for loving me, Father,
when I am so unlovable. Thank You for
looking at me through the blood of Jesus and seeing me as valuable.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen!
