March 1 - Judges 9:1-6
March 1 - Judges 9:1-6
9 Now
Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem to his mother's relatives
and said to them and to the whole clan of his mother's family, 2 “Say
in the ears of all the leaders of Shechem, ‘Which is better for you, that all seventy
of the sons of Jerubbaal rule over you, or that one rule over you?’ Remember
also that I am your bone and your flesh.”
3 And his
mother's relatives spoke all these words on his behalf in the ears of all the
leaders of Shechem, and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech, for they
said, “He is our brother.” 4 And they gave him
seventy pieces of silver out of the house of Baal-berith with which
Abimelech hired worthless and reckless fellows, who followed him. 5 And
he went to his father's house at Ophrah and killed his brothers the
sons of Jerubbaal, seventy men, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of
Jerubbaal was left, for he hid himself. 6 And all
the leaders of Shechem came together, and all Beth-millo, and they went
and made Abimelech king, by the oak of the pillar at Shechem.
Here we see a man claim
the position of a special leader but he acts without the support of God. There
is no mention of God speaking with Abimelech. There is no presence of the Holy
Spirit in the scripture passage. The pieces of silver were from the temple of
Baal-berith. This man wanted to be king at all cost, Much blood was shed so
that he could have his way.
Are we always mindful of
the cost of following our plan as opposed to following God’s plan? His plan is
always perfect, God never shows up early or late. His timing is just what we
need. Think about your plans for the day, the desires of your heart or your
mission for your life. Where is God among your thoughts? Did you remember to
“seek ye first the kingdom of God”?
Heavenly Father, I praise You
for who You are and thank You for all You’ve done. Help me to align my desires with Your
will. I want to desire the things that
are important to You and not just want comfort and an easy life. May You give me what I need to get through
the difficult days as well as those that are easy. May I never forget who yu are and all you’ve
done. Thank You for loving me without
promise of love in return.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen!
