February 25 – Judges 8:4-9

And Gideon came to the Jordan and crossed over, he and the 300 men who were with him, exhausted yet pursuing. So he said to the men of Succoth, “Please give loaves of bread to the people who follow me, for they are exhausted, and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna, the kings of Midian.” And the officials of Succoth said, “Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in your hand, that we should give bread to your army?” So Gideon said, “Well then, when the Lord has given Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, I will flail your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers.” And from there he went up to Penuel, and spoke to them in the same way, and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered. And he said to the men of Penuel, “When I come again in peace, I will break down this tower.”

Fear makes us act in a way that doesn’t show our best side on a good day, but these two groups just saw 15,000 of the enemy go by as they retreated.  They knew there was a huge group that could easily defeat these 300 men that stood before them.  They couldn’t imagine that with God on their side, they would defeat them.  Historically the Israelites were not victorious against the armies.  Logic would say 300 cannot defeat 15,000.  Logic and fear often keeps us from seeing the truth of God’s ways.

Have you ever allowed fear to keep you from believing God’s truth?

Have you ever allowed fear to keep you from SPEAKING God’s truth?

Heavenly Father, how often I temporarily forget how amazing You are and how You can defy all the odds.  Is it because I don’t believe in You?  Is it because I am so surrounded by the world and the teachings of logic that I forget You defy logic with everything You do?

You defy logic with Your creation.  You defy logic with Your Son’s miraculous birth.  You defy logic with Your love that gave Him up so I could live.  You defy logic by wanting to have a relationship with the very people who put Your Son in the cross.

Thank You Father for loving me so much that You turn Your back on what makes sense and love me despite logic.

In Jesus’ name.

Amen!
