February 18 – Judges 6:25-32

28  When the men of the town rose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was broken down, and the Asherah beside it was cut down, and the second bull was offered on the altar that had been built.  29  And they said to one another, “Who has done this thing?” And after they had searched and inquired, they said, “Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing.”  30  Then the men of the town said to Joash, “Bring out your son, that he may die, for he has broken down the altar of Baal and cut down the Asherah beside it.”  31  But Joash said to all who stood against him, “Will you contend for Baal? Or will you save him? Whoever contends for him shall be put to death by morning. If he is a god, let him contend for himself, because his altar has been broken down.”  32  Therefore on that day Gideon was called Jerubbaal, that is to say, “Let Baal contend against him,”

because he broke down his altar.

No one likes it when his or her idols are taken away or destroyed.  The Israelites were angry when they saw their altars had been torn down.  They called for Gideon’s death, but his father intervened and the people called Gideon Jerubbaal and desired for Baal to contend against him.

Look into your heart for idols?  What idols do you worship?  You may say, “I have no idols!”  Think of an idol as anything/anyone who separates you or divides your loyalty from God.  Pray for God to reveal any idols in your life and let nothing separate you from the love of God.

Heavenly Father, help me see what idols I have.  I know I wish I could say I have no idols, but I know there are times I allow people, things, situations, and my own wants get in the way of what You ask me to do and I know these are idols.  How often do I put my own comfort as an idol or being entertained as something I allow to keep me from doing what You have for me?  Help me see these idols and keep them in their place.  Nothing should come before You.  Even my family shouldn’t ever keep me from doing what You ask me to do.  How difficult it is to truly identify idols and keep my priorities in order.  Father, You alone are priority one.  Help me never forget that.  Help me live my life with You first in my life.

In Jesus’ name.

Amen!
