December 14 – Joshua 2:8-14

Before the men lay down, she came up to them on the roof and said to the men, “I know that the Lord has given you the land, and that the fear of you has fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melt away before you. 10 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you devoted to destruction. 11 And as soon as we heard it, our hearts melted, and there was no spirit left in any man because of you, for the Lord your God, he is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath. 12 Now then, please swear to me by the Lord that, as I have dealt kindly with you, you also will deal kindly with my father's house, and give me a sure sign 13 that you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death.” 14 And the men said to her, “Our life for yours even to death! If you do not tell this business of ours, then when the Lord gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you.”

Rahab recounts the experiences the Egyptians had with the Israelites. She confesses the country is in great fear of the Israelites. She is in fear for the safety of her family and asks the spies to deal kindly with her and her family. I love their response as they acknowledge her request and affirm that they will take care of her family.

I love that this woman, whom many would consider immoral and unimportant, will be protected by God. As believers, we need to live daily in a manner that allows used to be used by God.

How should that thought drive our daily decisions? How can we make ourselves available to people in need?

Heavenly Father, help me to be open to love those You send my way that need to see and experience Your love and compassion.  Help me be a vessel You can use to show love to those around me.  I know I need to show love to everyone, not just those I deem as “deserving” of Your love.  No one deserves Your love and there is nothing any of us could do to begin to deserve it, but I am so grateful You give it anyhow.  Help me see people as You do, needing love, not just seeing them for what they deserve.  So often I act like a pharisee.  Please forgive me when I do that and help me do better.  Not for me, but for You.  Help me represent You well.  I want to be one You can count on to reflect Your love, and not judgmental and unkind.  I love You so much, Father, help me reflect Your love daily in all I do.

In Jesus’ name.

Amen!
