Exodus 31:12-18
12 And the Lord said to Moses, 13 “You
are to speak to the people of Israel and say, ‘Above all you shall keep my
Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations,
that you may know that I, the Lord,
sanctify you. 14 You shall keep the Sabbath,
because it is holy for you. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to
death. Whoever does any work on it, that soul shall be cut off from among
his people. 15 Six days shall work be done,
but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the
Sabbath day shall be put to death. 16 Therefore the
people of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, observing the Sabbath throughout their
generations, as a covenant forever. 17 It is a sign
forever between me and the people of Israel that in six days the Lord made heaven and earth,
and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’”
18 And he gave to Moses, when
he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, the two tablets of the
testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God.
Rest was important to God. He states that he gave six days for work, but
the seventh was for rest and to honor Him.
He told this to Moses on Mt Sinai thus it is called the Sinai
Covenant. The Sabbath, as the seventh
day is called, is to honor God and know that our Lord is holy. The Sabbath was to be observed weekly.
There are those whose profession calls
them to work on the Sabbath. How can
they observe the Sabbath? How do you
honor God and keep the Sabbath holy?
Does it mean something different today
to keep the Sabbath Holy?
Why was it so important to the
children of Israel that they understand that day of rest?
Heavenly Father, our world today doesn’t
always allow us to truly rest on the Sabbath, but I do know we still need to be
focused on honoring You. Help me to
always remember that my body does need rest and I need to take time to rest my
body, but also my mind. I don’t want it
to become like the pharisees pushed it to be where the simplest thing was thought
of as work. I imagine You were sad to
see that so much work went into trying to stay within the law of keeping the Sabbath
holy, that people couldn’t truly rest due to the fear they would violate the
laws that man put in place. I want to
keep every day holy for You, Father, and keep You uppermost in my mind with
everything I do. Help me focus on You
and living out Your gospel daily.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen!
