Exodus 30:11-16
11 The Lord said to Moses, 12 “When
you take the census of the people of Israel, then each shall give a ransom
for his life to the Lord when
you number them, that there be no plague among them when you number them. 13 Each
one who is numbered in the census shall give this: half a shekel according
to the shekel of the sanctuary (the shekel is twenty
gerahs), half a shekel as an offering to the Lord. 14 Everyone who is
numbered in the census, from twenty years old and upward, shall give the Lord's offering. 15 The
rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less, than the half
shekel, when you give the Lord's
offering to make atonement for your lives. 16 You
shall take the atonement money from the people of Israel and shall give it
for the service of the tent of meeting, that it may bring the people of Israel
to remembrance before the Lord,
so as to make atonement for your lives.”
God instructs Moses and Aaron to conduct a census and take half a shekel
equaling about $3.00 today as a tax.
This tax is not as much about population as it is a reminder that God
has saved their lives.
Troubles abound in our lives and we can find ourselves with doubts of
God’s will or goodness. How can you fix your eyes on Christ to see His goodness
regardless of life circumstances?
Heavenly Father, help me to remember
Your sacrifice daily as I go about my day.
That is what You wanted for the children of Israel and what You want for
us today. To remember all You have
done. You took care of them and got them
out of Egypt. You had saved the prior to
that with Joseph’s many years in prison as an innocent man. You allowed him to save his people from the
famine. All You do is for us, yet we don’t
give You our praise, thanks and time just spent with You as our Father. Help me to remember to sit with You each day
and thank You for all You do. How You
give me each breath, the loved ones around me, my health and ability to work,
You give me Yourself. How often do I
thank You for all You do and for how You walk with me each and every day, and
for carrying the load when it seems too much to bear. Father, I thank You. I want to be thankful every day. Help me to remember and to stop and praise
You for who You are, not just what You have done. Thank You for Your willingness to love me and
listen to me when I’m sure You wish I would stop and listen to You for a
change. Help me to stop and listen for
Your voice each and every day!
In Jesus’ name.
Amen!
